About NOVA SHRM Spring 2020 Certification Study Group

If you've been thinking about obtaining your certification, why go it alone? Join us for a 14-week certification study group to prepare yourself for the SHRM certification exam. These sessions will be facilitated by certified members of NOVA SHRM. Most sessions will be held in person and some will be online.

Our mission is to help you become certified. We have priced this course to cover costs. The fees listed below are less than you'd pay for directly purchasing the SHRM Learning System. Take advantage of the discounted pricing. Registration is limited, so do not delay!

Certification Session Facilitators:

Anna Sinha, MBA, SHRM-SCP

Anna has over 12 years of human resources experience assisting small to mid-size organizations. She brings a wealth of experience across a diverse range of industries including: IT, Telecommunications, Healthcare, and not-for-profit businesses. Working directly with and for senior leadership teams, Anna has designed and implemented recruiting/hiring/on boarding strategies, benefit programs and effective recognition programs. She has been facilitating the NOVA SHRM Study Group for the last 3 years.

Anna has Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Business Administration. She holds a Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) certification and has an excellent insight knowledge on the SHRM exam, questions and how to relate the body of knowledge to the test.

She is a member of the Society for Human Resource Management and an active member & volunteer with the Northern VA Chapter of SHRM.

In her spare time, she likes to read, cook and travel.


Ronda Hetterson SHRM – SCP, SPHR

Ronda Hetterson is the HR Director of Thompson Facilities Services at Howard University. She has over 20 years experience in the HR profession. Ronda has extensive experience in providing strategic oversight for all labor and employee relations matters in cooperation with the Union contracts. She provides consultation to managers and leadership regarding work-related issues, conflicts, and discipline policy/procedures questions, contract interpretation to assure adherence to the CBA.

Ronda has represented organizations at Union grievance meetings, court hearings, and investigations. Provided testimony and documentation to DC Superior court, DC Administrative court, Union arbitrations, Union grievances, DC Dept. of Employment Services, and the EEOC.

She holds a Master’s degree from Marymount University, and is SPHR and SHRM-SCP certified.


Na Shai Alexander SHRM - SCP

Na Shai Alexander is a Senior Manager, Diversity & Inclusion at Capital One Financial Corporation. In her current role, Na Shai provides strategic direction on enterprise initiatives to attract, develop, and engage a diverse workforce. An avid writer and diversity and inclusion advocate, Na Shai has held several roles in diversity and inclusion, marketing and communications, talent acquisition, and human resources over the last 9 years in both the financial services and defense, aerospace, and security industries.

Na Shai holds a master’s degree in Strategic Human Capital Management with a concentration in Diversity and Inclusion from Georgetown University and a bachelor’s degree in English and Psychology from the University of Virginia. She is a Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) Senior Certified Professional, and has previously served on the Board of Directors for the Northern Virginia Society of Human Resource Management (NOVA SHRM) and Northern Virginia Urban League Young Professionals Network (NVULYPN). She is a contributing writer for The Inclusion Solution, a blog dedicated to topics related to diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice, and is an active volunteer with several local organizations in the Northern Virginia community, including her sorority, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.

When she’s not blogging or researching new ways to better include and empower others, Na Shai enjoys cooking, traveling with friends, and discovering new stationery.


Janet Nguyen SHRM – SCP, SPHR

Janet Nguyen is the Director, Benefits and Compensation at Rare, a not for profit conservation organization. At Rare, Janet leads Benefits and Compensation strategy and delivery. Prior to joining Rare in 2018, Janet spent over 20 years building and leading HR teams in both federal and commercial companies primarily in the technology and consulting services industries. Throughout her career working in medium and large, multi-national organizations, Janet has delivered consultative HR services with subject matter expertise in employee relations, change management, project management, acquisition integration, training and development, recruitment, benefits, compensation and systems.

Janet earned a B.A. in Psychology from James Madison University and a M.A. in HR Management from Marymount University. She is certified as a Senior Human Resources Professional (SPHR) by the Human Resources Institute (HRCI) and a Senior Certified Professional (SCP) by the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM).

Over the last decade, Janet has served on the Board of Directors for the NOVA chapter of the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) in multiple leadership roles including the VP, Development and VP, Certification responsible for professional development programming and certification training for a membership base of more than 800 HR professionals. Personally, Janet enjoys traveling with her husband and three girls, currently ages 16, 13, and 10 years.


Study Group Delivery Method:

  • The first session to kick off the program will be in person on February 23 from 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm at the Ambit office (8607 Westwood Center Drive Vienna VA).
  • Each participant will receive the SHRM Learning System at this first session and will be a great opportunity to to meet the facilitator(s) and the other course participants.

Why You Should Choose Certification and How to Register for the Exam:

Registration for the SHRM certification exam is a separate registration/fee paid directly to SHRM. Our study group will end on May 17, so you have two months to take the exam in the Spring 2020 window.

Early Bird Application Deadline: March 20, 2020
Regular Application Deadline: April 10, 2020

  • Registration is limited to the first 15 students
  • Registration fee must be paid in order to confirm your spot in the study group
  • Although registration may sell out before this date, please be sure to register by February 3 to ensure that we have the SHRM Learning System available for you at the first class.
